A professora abordará o tema: “An overview of the expression of PLUNC family members in the head and neck region”.
The Palate Lung Nasal Clone (PLUNC) family of proteins is an extended group of proteins expressed in the upper airways, nose and mouth and that they are secreted into the airway and nasal lining fluids and saliva. We still know very little about the function of these proteins but their predicted structure is very similar to that of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein and bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein and this led us to hypothesis that they may play a role in the innate immune defence. The major salivary PLUNC protein, short PLUNC 2, will be the subject of my lecture. We know that it is secreted from all major and minor salivary glands into the saliva. We have studied its’ expression in normal tissues, in salivary gland tumours and also some of the characteristics of the secreted product. We have also carried out a number of studies to try to elucidate the function of this protein. All of these topics will be discussed.
